TRYOUT PROCESS 2016-2017

COMPETITIVE SORTING SKATE, INTER-SQUAD SCRIMMAGE AND EXHIBITION GAMES

The Head Coach of every team, plus a minimum of 2 additional evaluators, assigned by the Coaching Convenor and approved by the Tryout Committee, will evaluate the players during the sorting skates and tryout process.

Skate #1: Players ranked over a 1.5 hour skill based sorting skate  

  • On-ice skills led by Head Coach of division (or assigned designate) and assisted by two or three certified SDMHA Coaches chosen by the Head Coach
  • Evaluation form will be comprised of 4 categories (Skating, Drive/Aggression, Play Making/Puck Control, and Hockey Sense)
  • Evaluation sheets are returned each night and tabulated
  • Forward and Defense Players ranked top to bottom
  • Goalies attend sorting skate and are evaluated at this time
  • Number of Goalies advancing determined by number of Goalies registered per division
  • Coach may have to sit out some players that are moving on to the exhibition game in order to have a manageable number for the inter-squad gam

Skate #2: consists of 1.5 hour inter-squad scrimmage run by Head Coach (or assigned designate)

  • Certified RIS (Respect in Sport - Activity Leader) individuals for doors and one Trainer needed  

  • Referees and Timekeepers to be scheduled (Bantam & Midget Divisions)
  • Recommended numbers moving forward or at a logical break in tabulated rankings
  • One third of players will be Defense

REP TRYOUTS

Tryout #1: consists of a scheduled home Exhibition Game

Tryout #2: consists of an away Exhibition Game

Tryout #3: consists of  a 2nd home Exhibition Game

Tryout #4: consists of a 2nd away Exhibition Game if necessary

  • Head Coaches or certified non-affiliated delegates will coach from the bench during all games
  • Game sheets will be completed and submitted; potentially top few players will sit to comply with OMHA's ruling of the  number of players allowed to be listed on the game sheet; game length  determined by league game standards
  • Referees and Timekeepers to be scheduled
  • Certified RIS individuals for doors and Trainer required
  • Evaluation sheets will be signed, returned and tabulated after each tryout
  • Cuts can be made after each Exhibition Game
  • All games will be evaluated
  • SDMHA Board will decide team sizes and final teams will be selected based on the evaluation sheets, input from the Head Coach and approval of the Tryout Committee.
  • Cuts will be communicated and a list of players and goalies scheduled to attend the AE Tryouts will be posted on the website www.sdmha.org
  • Players and goalies cut from the Rep Tryout will proceed to the AE Tryouts

  

AE TRYOUT 

The Head Coach of every team plus a minimum of 2 additional evaluators, assigned by the Coaching Convenor and approved by the Tryout Committee, will evaluate the players during the sorting skates and tryout process.

  • On-ice skills and inter-squad scrimmage led by Head Coach and one certified non-affiliated assistant; players divided into teams based on number of Forward and Defense Players for scrimmage

  • Certified RIS individuals for doors and one Trainer needed
  • Referees and Timekeepers to be scheduled (Bantam & Midget Divisions)

  • Cuts can occur so that no more than 23 players advance to the Exhibition Games

    Tryout #2 : consists of a scheduled Home Exhibition Game

         Tryout #3 : consists of a scheduled Away Exhibition Game

LOCAL LEAGUE SORTING SKATES 

  •  The Head Coaches of each Local League Team within a Division will evaluate during the sorting skates - three evaluators per division; divisions with only two Local League Teams will be assigned an additional evaluator (individual to be determined by Coaching Convener)
  • Local League Sorting Skate #1 consists of an 1.5 hour skill based skate led by one or two certified SDMHA Coaches (Coaching Convener to assign)
  • Simplified evaluation form with three categories are returned and tabulated
  • Forwards and Defense Players ranked top to bottom; Coaches divide players based on rankings from Sorting Skate #1 into equally balanced teams with Local League Convener
  • Local League Sorting Skate #2 consists of an inter-squad scrimmage (length determined by league game lengths) with one Referee and one Timekeeper; Head Coaches with their potential bench staff will assume bench positions, including Trainer
  • Any inequalities between the teams will be adjusted following the inter-squad scrimmage
  • Final Teams will be posted on the website www.sdmha.org

 

Player Selections and Cuts 

Sorting skate results will be posted on the website www.sdmha.org 

  • Competitive Team selections will be posted on the website www.sdmha.org
  • Players cut from Competitive Teams that would like feedback concerning their tryout can request a review with the Head Coach.  All review requests are to be emailed to [email protected] and the Coaching Convenor will coordinate the date and time.  The Head Coach and a SDMHA Board Member will be present during the review. Parents/Guardians are welcome to join.
