SDMHA Drug & Alcohol Policy

Alcohol, performance enhancing and/or narcotic drugs have no place in youth sports. Strathroy District Minor Hockey Association (SDMHA) is committed to providing all our players with an alcohol and drug free environment. Our Alcohol and Illegal Drug Policy will be strictly enforced.

TERMS AND DEFINITIONS:
MEMBER: player, team official (coaching staff/trainer), manager, on-ice official, off-ice official
TEAM ACTIVITY: game, practice, dryland, organized team event, etc.

ALCOHOL AND ILLEGAL DRUGS & SUBSTANCES:
If a player is caught using illegal drugs, alcohol, and controlled substances, including all tobacco products such as chewing tobacco, vaping products, marijuana, and non-prescribed pharmaceuticals, during any Minor Hockey event, he/she will be suspended immediately.

Any member caught during a SDMHA team activity under the influence of alcohol, illegal drugs, other controlled substances, or any player found to be in the possession of or attempting to distribute the mentioned items, will be immediately suspended until a hearing with the SDMHA Executive can be convened to determine the length of the suspension or possibly, expulsion.

The suspended player will not be allowed to participate in any team activities until the suspension in dealt with.

In the event that a player contravenes this policy:
1.) If the parents/guardians are at the event, the player will be turned over to their care.
2.) If the parents are not at the event, the player will be sent home (under escort), and any additional expenses incurred will be the responsibility of the player and their family.

In the event that a coach or on-ice official contravenes this policy, they will be asked to IMMEDIATELY leave the arena. They will be suspended and asked to appear before the SDMHA Executive to determine the length of the suspension or expulsion.

SANCTIONS:
First Infraction – includes up to a two-game suspension. During the suspension period, the player is required to attend team activities, including games (non-participant), practices, team building and dryland.

Second Infraction – includes a minimum three games and up to an eight game suspension. During the suspension period, the player is required to attend team activities, including games (non-participant), practices, team building and dryland. The player may be required to attend an assessment and addiction counselling session as approved by the SDMHA Executive.

Third Infraction – will result in the immediate and indefinite suspension of the player, to be reviewed by the SDMHA Executive to render an appropriate course of action.

All decisions, regarding the discipline under the SDMHA Game & Conduct Policy for addressing ALCOHOL AND ILLEGAL DRUGS AND SUBSTANCES shall be at the discretion of the SDMHA Executive whose decision will be final.

No refunds for any part of the season or for tournaments for any player who is in violation of the SDMHA Alcohol and Drug Policy
